And in fact, it's Odysseus who has the idea that Helen should be the one to choose her own suitor.
He doesn't.
He expects that he's going to get a reward from Helen's father.
So this is Odysseus through and through.
He's very canny, canny operator.
Exactly.
And so he knows that if he suggests this very clever solution, he's going to get a reward.
And his reward is the hand of Penelope, who is Helen's cousin.
Well, exactly.
And that's at the point where Paris has come to Sparta, Paris, the Prince of Troy.
He has basically been given Helen as his prize by Aphrodite, the goddess of love.
And Odysseus then, as all of the Greeks are, in a bit of a pickle because Menelaus, Helen's husband, who has been wronged, who's
wife has been stolen from him by this Trojan prince, goes to Agamemnon, lord of all the Greeks, Agamemnon, his brother, and he says, I need to get my wife back.
And Agamemnon immediately says he's going to round up all of the Greeks.
Well, Odysseus quite clearly doesn't want to go.
And this is quite interesting because many of the other Greeks are sort of quite happy to get on with the business, get themselves a little bit of glory, but not Odysseus.
And what he does is he pretends to be mad.
So he pretends that he can sort of try and get a way out of the conscription, essentially.
But this kind of trickster called Palamedes, who is every bit as tricky as Odysseus, realises that he might be kind of pulling one over his eyes.
And so he takes his baby, his baby son at that point, Telemachus, Penelope and Odysseus' son, and he puts the baby son in front of the plough where Odysseus is pretending that he's kind of gone crazy.
