And in 249, this big Roman fleet is brought to fight the Carthaginians off of the West Coast.
It supposedly includes slaves being recruited.
Into the Navy because there are so few recruits available to the Romans even.
So Rome is having manpower problems.
Rome is having financial problems.
Carthage is having financial problems.
So this seems to be and it's built up to be this last gasp.
The um consul Tiberius Claudius is trying to do all the, you know, per uh the correct um rituals before the uh sea battle is fought.
And he's on his ship, the the fleet commanding ship, probably a seven, so a big ship with seven banks of oars.
And he has chickens, and these chickens are supposed to uh give him the auspices.
So the chickens eating in a certain way will tell.
Held the console or the uh people who are reading the auspices, the omens, whether or not the battle should be fought that day.
The chickens have to eat the grain that they're given, or you can't fight the battle.
It would be bad luck.
And that's the story.
And so supposedly, as the story goes, Tiberius Claudius, the chickens won't eat, the chickens won't eat, and he's absolutely fed up.
So he picks up the chickens.
He said, Well, if they won't eat, maybe they'll drink, and he throws them into the sea.
And this is viewed by the Romans as the most atrocious thing that g happen.
And of course, what happens afterwards is the defeat of the Roman fleet off of Drapanian Rome scoots back.
