All of those therapies are what we call passive therapies.
You are a passive participant in it.
You lie on a bed and somebody sticks needles into your back.
In the case of acupuncture, somebody maybe does a manipulation on you.
Somebody gives you a prescription for a medication.
None of that puts you in the driver's seat of your pain.
And all of that has been found to be
really suboptimal for recovery from your back pain.
What is really, really helpful is what we call self-efficacy, which is where you have a plan.
In the book, I talked about actually not a patient of mine, but a
She was going, honestly, she was spending an absolute fortune on chiropractic.
She was going two to three times a week on chiro and for years and years and years.
And she could tell when she hadn't had a chiro session, her back pain would be absolutely diabolical.
And for a variety of reasons, she stopped going to chiro because she couldn't.
And eventually had her own system going where she took, you know, a couple of ibuprofens in this situation.
And sometimes she changed up her yoga in the other situation and
She'd go for chiro in the end twice a year.
She didn't have back pain anymore, but what she was doing was actually doing some yoga and some walking every single day.
And she found her system for managing her back pain, which is in medical speak, self-efficacy.
In her case, we know that going and having a truckload of scans and getting all the prescriptions would have made her prognosis worse.
