It turns out that about 70% of them have really horrific looking backs.
Discs are out.
There's arthritis in their spine.
There's bubbles that are called osteophytes that look like little rice bubbles growing on the edges of your vertebrae that actually can stick into and poke into different things.
It looks like garbage on an MRI machine, and yet the vast majority of them have no back pain whatsoever.
So when you go and do that for somebody who does have back pain, how can we tell that
whether the two MRIs that look identical, one person with no pain and one person has lots of pain, do you treat them differently?
Or does now the MRI just cloud the situation?
Now we're jumping at shadows that might not actually be the thing that's causing the pain.
And in fact, the whole thing could be from misfiring nerves.
And we've now investigated low back pain in particular, really, really, really thoroughly.
And what we found is that doing MRIs or CAT scans
sends you on a really long wild goose chase that keeps somebody trapped in the medical system and keeps them from feeling empowered about how they're going to manage this pain because they're waiting for the next result.
They find out that there's a rice bubble here or a facet joint there or a disc out there and now you're thinking about this disc that's out and it changes the way you think about your pain.
And yet when we look at studies,
the evidence from everything from a paracetamol and an ibuprofen to most forms of manipulation of the back to most hardcore anti-inflammatories and certainly to surgery is absolutely woeful.
The best evidence comes from going for a walk.
Absolutely movement every single day.
So now the question is this, do we, if you have terrible back pain, do we get you to go to the doctor and go and
get into the medical system and have all your tests and go for your physio.
