but partly because we don't want that perivisceral fat, which is going to be constantly pumping out pro-inflammatory hormones.
It does seem that beyond getting rid of your perivisceral fat, these GLP-1 receptor agonists actually seem to be anti-inflammatory as well.
And so until now, in order to access them, the first range that came out, you needed to have diabetes and not just diabetes, but diabetes where your sugar numbers were not at what we call targets
the optimum range, despite using two to three different medications.
Then, and only then, could you get onto these medications.
And then a whole range came out that were specifically for obesity and you did not need to be diabetic to have them.
They're privately acquired.
They're very, very expensive.
But the data on them is just incredible.
Everything from reduction of need for knee replacement surgery, reduced what we call MAFLD, metabolic associated fatty liver disease, which is a horrible disease where the fat around your liver starts to invade into your liver and causes a whole stack of inflammation and can even cause cirrhosis and even liver cancer.
So awful.
And it's linked to diabetes and gout and
high blood pressure and dementia and yeah, blah, blah, blah, terrible stuff, right?
The GLP-1 seem to really, really help with so many different conditions that I would imagine that it will not be too long till you can access these drugs medically, especially as they come off patent, which they already have in China.
They're off patent already, certainly as MP gets off patent.
As they become cheaper and more of these things come to market, I think
that we will be able to access these for everything from osteoarthritis of the knee to back pain to liver disease to high blood pressure, diabetes, eye disease, all sorts of things because of the positive benefits we've seen.
I have had patients where I have had to take them off their blood pressure medication because part of losing weight
Which is one of the key treatments of hypertension, high blood pressure.
Part of losing weight means that the medication that they're on takes their blood pressure so low, they're starting to feel really dizzy and even risk falling over.
