At one point in the book, I don't know whether either of you might want to pick this one up.
You write about how conscious thought and intention
often we tell ourselves that we're thinking rationally, but actually they're sort of like post hoc rationalizations of what has already been decided pre-consciously or by our guts, if you like, by our instincts.
And Jonathan Haidt has written about this in his book, The Righteous Mind, he uses the metaphor of the elephant and the rider, that our guts or our sort of emotional life, our sort of gut instinct is the elephant and we're the rider.
And we sort of, we think we're steering
actually that elephant's going where it wants to anyway.
And we can see this thing in any number of sort of polarized debates that we see where people are sort of like impervious to rational persuasion.
Right.
You can show people a graph that shows that, you know, unvaccinated people don't live as good outcomes as people who are vaccinated, for example.
Well, people who are really convinced that vaccinations are like somehow evil.
I'm not going to be persuaded by that graph.
It's like they've decided on some other level.
And you can see this in the way that people vote or all kinds of different ways.
But is this in some cases like something to be, you know, is this like a denial of the idea of like a mind-body, mind-body, taking a more cohesive approach to actually sometimes our guts are
wrong about things and actually it's good to think things through.
Is this something to be cautious about?
I don't know if I phrased that very well but do you know what I'm driving at?
Yeah.
Thank you.
Thank you for that.
