We gotta do the right thing.

So people know that we're good Christian people.

Well, come to find out, um, on my adoption paperwork, my mom had indicated that she practiced the same religion in the same denomination.

Her fatal flaw was that she happened to get pregnant outside of wedlock.

I hate that word.

So being sinful in that way evidently made her unsafe.

And that's a very spiritual abuse type of narrative that was kind of a big part of the reason I didn't get to have contact with her.

Oh, 100%.

Yeah, I definitely did.

A lot of times I'd bring up a question I had or something that didn't make sense.

And I was kind of the, oh gosh, what's the word?

The truth teller in the family structure I was in.

And so I think I made people uncomfortable with a lot of the questions I was asking.

But when it came to asking the ones about adoption, I was usually pretty quickly shut down.

And I think it's just not having the emotional bandwidth to even consider what the answer would be to that question that I was asking.

But you're absolutely right.

And a huge passion of mine is how often spiritual abuse

coincides with the narratives about being adopted.

I absolutely absorb some really crummy theology as an adoptee growing up in evangelical Christianity and have been working to debunk some of the things that I learned.

And it was so interesting to me to look at some of the most touted verses about adoption in the New Testament.
