I mean, the first is this prizing of virginity that's always been a thing for women and not a thing for men, where a woman goes into a marriage and the ideal situation for her in a marriage is untouched, right?

She's more precious, more valuable than

if she hasn't had another man's hands on her.

That has faith-based religious aspects to it.

Then there are other social as well as biological explanations.

Historically, sex has actually been quite risky for women.

Before birth control, or I should say before reliable birth control, having sex outside of a committed relationship could leave me with a child.

So therefore, I had to be more discerning about sex and having sex outside of a committed relationship

would potentially leave me in a position as an unwed mother and all of the catastrophic consequences that come with that historically so there was a penalty attached socially culturally economically that meant that women steered or at least were encouraged to steer away from that of course it's never been you know it's it's much like the virginity pledges that

All the research backs up.

Many, many, many people sign them and very few stick to it in the end.

It was a nice idea in theory abstaining, but sex is actually a real drive that you can't wish away.

And that's for both men and women.

You could argue that there are lots of people for lots of different reasons who feel that life is a little bit shallow.

Now, this could be, you know, there's a number of different reasons sociologically we can point to.

For example, we're less likely to join stuff now.

We have smaller groups of friends now.

We do a lot of our contact and socialising online, et cetera.

So a lot of people will report in research that they feel a little bit empty.

I can imagine some of these people think that might be connected to the kind of sex that they're having and that the lack of depth in a lot of relationships.
