It's interesting because there has historically been this idea that men have this unbridled sexual appetite and therefore we have to accept they have to masturbate because their libido is so high.

It's, you know,

anytime, anywhere, and if you can't get sex, you have to use your hands.

Women, there's this understanding, or historically there's been this understanding that their libidos are lower, that sex is something they trade for love and relationships, and therefore masturbation isn't something that they're thinking much about because they're simply not as horny.

Recently, though, that's changed and it's changed in a big way in a big or to a large extent because of capitalism and the market and the fact that we've now got

massive sex toy industry that's predominantly targeting women.

Now, there have been now moves towards a greater variety of sex toys for men, but it's still nowhere near as big a market as as that is for women and partly to sell those toys.

you have had to normalise masturbation as being okay and acceptable in a general sense to do and to talk about.

And that's also happened at the same time as the rise in pornography and women's access to that as well.

And, you know, the exposure that's given to a whole lot of sexual practices as well as heightened horniness.

Yeah, and partly that's to do with some of the earliest male sex toys were insertion toys.

And for a lot of men, there is always this idea that if a man's being penetrated, the only possible interpretation of that act is homosexual.

So there was a bit of an ick factor around

For some men who identified themselves as super the most heterosexual I could ever be and therefore can't enjoy anything that's to do with the prostate.

Now there's toys that have a – not just insertion toys but a whole lot of different male toys and that's also –

sort of facilitating this idea that men can also experiment with pleasure.

And I think that's an interesting aspect to this story as well.

We always talk about men masturbating as though it's just a solution to their libido.
