What I found is over the 25 years, 50,000 hours of training, 50,000 hours of experience, 7,000 operations, closing the instrument 2 million times.
What have I learned about concentration and performance?
And how can I leverage that?
And really what I learned is that
Fear is the enemy and it's the enemy, not just in neurosurgery, it's the enemy in performance of anybody's fear of life.
Whatever we do, whether we're a parent, whether we're a business person, whether we're making a deal, fear gets in the way of our performance.
And if we can figure out how to dismantle it.
How do we wrestle with it in a way to minimize it?
That's when our performance elevates.
And I tell a story about when I was, you asked about the frequency of operations.
So early on in my career, I was planning to do an operation on a patient that had a brain tumor in the back of their head.
in a location where there was a very tricky vein, where you had to really be careful to preserve that vein as you were doing the surgery.
And it turned out I was doing that surgery on Friday after a long week.
And the surgery was postponed from 1130 in the morning to three o'clock in the afternoon, which is not an ideal time to operate.
You still have good competent staff, but everybody has shifted and the person who set the table for the surgery is leaving and you're getting a new person there.
So I'm totally exhausted.
And I'm thinking, wow, you know, I'm trying to get myself psyched up to do the surgery.
But it's the end of the week.
It's a long week.
It's a long week.
