This all has effects when we think of the case of Enron.
I like to bring up Enron many, many years ago.
Um, like there was this huge culture of silence that like no one was talking about the corruptive behaviors that were happening, and that that had huge consequences on the outcomes for the whole firm and whole organization.
So you can see here that silence is not.
not just situated within the individuals, whilst it does have very negative consequences on oneself, it can impact the team, the performance of the team, the well being of the team, and then the sustainability of the organization.
In the hospital context, we specifically looked at whether people end up reporting um errors that they were making or not.
And of course, this has flow on consequences eventually to medical errors or how they treat their patient or how they create a sense of patient safety.
Yeah.
So there's been a lot of research looking at how leaders can cultivate or create certain clim what we call climates or shared understandings of of voice and silence in the workplace.
And there's two leadership characteristics that come to my mind at right at this point.
And um one of them is abusive supervision.
And this is very a very common type when your leaders reprimand you when they are actively trying to
exploit you or they're shouting at you or or there's also passive forms of abusive division such as lying to you, taking your credit, for example.
All of this makes us feel very unsafe to speak up and share um anything that could be useful because one, it could harm us, one it could um, you know, not amount to anything for us personally.
But there are also positive forms of leadership and this is where I
get very excited in how we can create a more positive vibe or workplace that can help reduce or create barriers towards silence.
So particular my own research, I look at how leaders who show humility, particular behaviors of leaders can allow for silence to kind of remain at bay.
So first of all, we have to realize that silence is thinking about opportunity.
So are we given the opportunity to voice or not?
So we we do have an idea um in our head and
