We're worried about being evaluated.

And the perspective I have on myself is different than the perspective you have on me.

The second is that social interaction itself is complicated.

You and I are connecting with each other in some way.

It's not a simple static relationship.

experience.

It goes back and forth.

It's dynamic.

A conversation is the clearest way to see this, right?

Where, you know, I talk to you, we go back and forth for a period of time, talk about different things.

I don't necessarily know where it's going to go.

Our expectations though, have a hard time representing those very complicated dynamic processes, but it's those dynamic processes that really connect us.

Dynamic processes like reciprocity, right?

I scratch your back, you scratch mine.

That is just the dominant social norm on the planet.

I poke you in the eye, you're going to poke me back in the eye, right?

And so when I reach out to you in a positive way, you tend to reach back, right?

Nobody waves, but almost everybody will wave back at you.

But our expectations don't really appreciate the power of reciprocity.
