And so we imagine...

ourselves being more independent of each other than we actually are.

We almost treat social interaction like we're bringing two marbles together and there's no real attraction between them, no force that connects them with each other in interaction.

They can kind of go any way.

So if we ask people to predict the outcome of a conversation, say, they predict just entire range of outcomes as possible.

In fact, not an entire range of outcomes as possible.

When you bring two people together, it's not like bringing marbles together.

It's like bringing magnets together because conversation itself

has kind of magnetic processes that pull us together so i start out with a kind word to you what do you tend to say back to me kind word right i say a topic that's of interest to me we start talking about you tend to think about a topic that's similar right along those same lines then we start talking about things we have in common you respond to me in conversation right you're looking at me right now right you're nodding at me you're giving me affirmation right now you smile

You'll do what's known as back channeling.

Back channeling is uttering things that aren't usually like full words or sentences.

Right, right.

Yeah.

That's back channeling.

That stuff is really important because it tells me that you are interested in what I have to say.

You're giving me feedback.

I know you're engaged with me.

It's what allows us to synchronize in conversation.

And that synchrony is what connects.

But we find that when people anticipate how an interaction is going to unfold, their expectations are not very sensitive to the presence or the absence of that.
