It's instead very sensitive to things like the type of person I'm talking to or what we're talking about.
Things that you might be able to represent, say, in a snapshot of an interaction, but not in the movie version of it, the dynamic unfolding version of it over time.
So people think having an interaction where you're actually having a conversation with somebody, a dialogue,
It's going to feel about the same as if we're just exchanging monologues.
You're telling me about yourself.
I'm telling you about myself.
In fact, what really matters is how we're connecting, whether we're actually in an interaction where we're having those reciprocal processes or not.
These are not very wise men.
There's a joke from Marcelo Hernandez, who plays Domingo on Saturday Night Live.
He's got a comedy special with a joke in it that I love.
He's saying, you know, whenever he sees a very attractive woman with an older guy, all of his friends will say, oh, that guy's got a ton of money.
And he jokes and says, no, that guy's got follow-up questions.
Alison Wood Brooks and other researchers have confirmed Hernandez's view of this and yours as well, which is that follow-up questions make conversation much better because it keeps it going.
I think part of it comes from the cognitive demands of actually having a conversation.
You're maybe trying to think about what to say, and it is a skill you can get better at.
These are hard questions for psychologists to answer because in order to say how things have been going over time, we have to be measuring things over time.
And there are certain things we have been measuring over time.
We know loneliness is on the rise.
We know that time spent alone is on the rise.
We know time spent in conversation is declining.
