We know the amount of words that we're saying

per day, in the United States at least, is declining.

So we are speaking less to each other.

It does make sense that we get better at things that we practice.

That is absolutely true.

Whether these changes are big enough to drive this in a powerful way, I don't know.

But I would absolutely believe that with enough

increase or decrease in practice, we would see increases and decreases in your ability to have these conversations.

Dates are a little complicated in part because sometimes, this is a guy who's been married for 30 years, so I have no experiences, but I do, I spent a lot of time with my wife in conversation, trying to be a good conversationalist.

I'm not always, you know, if you're trying to think about what to say and to put your best foot forward, you can often be very focused on yourself, right?

And that can then just make it hard to shift attention to somebody else.

It could be.

But certainly to the listeners of your podcast, the way to be a better conversationalist is to be willing to share meaningful things about yourself because it shows you you trust somebody else, that you are a warm, honest person.

But then also to take an interest in somebody else.

If you take an interest in somebody else, take an interest in getting to know them, that will often prompt you to provide more follow-up questions.

And it turns out if you take an interest in the other person, you will naturally, I think, be a better conversationalist.

If you're more willing to be open and honest with somebody else, that tends to go much better than you would think.

How we can make somebody else be better?

That's a good question.

I don't know.
