Michael Slepian studies secrecy, and he finds that people on average are keeping about 13 secrets from 13 different categories from other people, things they're not sharing with others.

And basically everybody's got something.

They're not telling someone about themselves.

There certainly is quite a bit of this.

And this really comes down to fear of harsh judgment.

Like if I tell you how hard a time I actually have writing, right?

I reveal that and just finish the book, right?

It looks like it should be easy for you.

It's good that you just managed it.

It's super hard.

It took me five years to put this thing together.

That's a long time.

If I share that with you, right, I worry you're going to evaluate me negatively because the content of that secret is somewhat negative.

That's what keeps people holding these kinds of secrets from other people.

So this is a thing that we find in our research that people misunderstand.

It is more positive than people expect to open up and disclose something to somebody else because opening up and disclosing something to someone else is a sign of warmth.

It's an action that creates trust.

But what we're mostly worried about is how we're being judged on these competency dimensions.
