We're worried about the valence of the content of the mission, of the information that we're sharing with somebody else, not the signal that the behavior itself is conveying to another person.

So when I tell you something honest about me, right, reveal a negative secret that I haven't shared with you, the content of that is negative, right?

But what we miss is that the action itself of revealing that information is positive, is right, that is trustworthy, is honest, signals to you that I trust you by sharing this information, by passing this along to you.

And so that's why it tends to be evaluated.

People tend not to be judged as harshly as they imagine by another person because revealing itself is positive.

So it's not that people don't pay attention to the content they do.

It's that in addition, there's this other big signal, which is you're an honest person.

And I like that.

I appreciate that.

More than they need to.

That's what I'll say from our data.

More than they need to be because of fears about how we'll be judged about things.

Particularly if you're keeping a secret that is kind of burdensome for you, right?

That's kind of hurting you in some way.

Not all secrets are.

The negative ones, the ones that are burdensome are the ones that people think about a lot, ruminate on or worried about, right?
