It's a little like physical exercise, right?
It's hard to change how much you exercise, but there are things that you can do to make it more routine.
And so thinking about sociality in terms of small moments that you have some choice or control over, that you can turn into habits so that you're no longer really thinking about them, I think that's the key to finding the places in our lives where we can make them a little more socially enriching.
It's important to understand why the habit is important, though.
What we've identified in our research is that these beliefs that you have about how other people respond to you can be wrong.
in ways that create barriers to reaching out in places that would make our lives better.
When you turn something into a habit, you're doing it routinely, which means you're learning.
So you learn what is it that's rewarding, right?
And then when you turn something into a habit, you stop thinking about it beforehand.
All those barriers, they're not coming to mind.
You just are doing it automatically.
It's automatic.
So this is the way you get around both mistaken beliefs and overthinking some kind of problem.
is you find a habit that works.
That is what habits do.
Yes.
As they kind of circumvent this mistaken belief problem that we find is endemic to keeping us overly isolated.
The habit, the thing I do routinely, it's what's known as the 10-5 rule.
The 10-5 rule comes from the world of hospitality.
It's ostensibly attributed to the Ritz-Carlton hotels, but I'm not sure that that's where it actually came from.
