But the apocryphal idea is that Ritz-Carlton, you know, years ago, to create a more hospitable environment at their hotels, encouraged all of their employees to practice the 10-5 rule.

And the 10-5 rule is when somebody's 10 feet away,

you smile at them.

And when they're five feet away, you say hello.

And that seems like the kind of thing that's not going to maybe matter a lot, but everybody you're friends with now was a stranger to you at one point, right?

Was somebody, you know, at one point you smiled with and you had a first conversation with.

And doing that

is something that you can apply just all over the place.

You know, my walk over here, I'm saying hi to people as I'm passing, making that moment better.

When I get in the car on the way to the airport today, when I'm in the airport, it's the kind of thing that just changes kind of the atmosphere in your life, the social ecology of your life from top to bottom.

Other people don't smile at you.

You smile at them first, they will smile back.

Other people tend not to say hi to you.

You say hi to them, they'll say hi to you back.

Your world just becomes a friendlier place when you are a friendlier person.

And that one thing has just made a huge difference for me.

Because look, I'm kind of a big guy.

I kind of look kind of scary.

Maybe I could at least.

I'm a college football player at heart, so I got still that kind of toughness in me.
