It goes back to the question though, Meredith of what does the sorry do?
So when I have a loss and someone says, I'm sorry for your loss, you have my condolences.
I know they're not saying sorry to take responsibility.
They're just using that message structure to say, I feel bad with you.
It's what it does functionally.
So when we think about speech, we want to always think about the utility of the speech.
What does it do?
And I think that's a part of it.
Oh, I think so.
Because if we say sorry all the time, then we just, I think, dilute our effectiveness communicatively.
And that I think is a big question for women to think about and say, are there communication strategies that you're doing that dilute your effectiveness?
I train a lot of students to become more assertive, especially in mediation training.
And they laugh at me and say, I'm never going to be assertive.
And I always say to them, yes, you will.
You're going to be assertive.
You just will have to learn that gradually.
But some of it is that we talk about in that curriculum is it's not so much about being louder.
It's not so much about being...
angrier it's more about just making adjustments whether that's word selection style pacing there's a lot of other things you can control that will not dilute your effectiveness but that's the thing i would care about the most is say that are there things we are doing in our speech that make us weak and we want to be careful about any kind of weakness because we don't need to be weaker
Yeah.
