You were supposed to have it together all the time and you don't dare announce your weaknesses to anybody.

And so that was tough, swallowing that and holding that in.

It wasn't until years later when I was done with medical school, I took my very first job after residency training in Northwest Indiana and worked with a population, this was before the Affordable Care Act had kicked in, where it was a safety net clinic.

So people that did not have insurance or were underinsured

came to this clinic.

We had a large homeless population as well.

A lot of people dealing with homelessness, drug addiction, housing insecurity, food insecurity, you name it, the list goes on.

And something happened.

inside that exam room like i'm thankful that i never experienced any of those things homelessness or you know going without food on the table or this that and the other but i know what it feels like to be broken and i know what it feels like to be told no when all you want is to hear a yes i know what it's like to sit with bad news

and feeling like the world is caving in and there isn't a way out.

And that was my end.

That was how I connected with those patients.

I mean, there's too many stories to even count, but it reminds me of one gentleman who was a father.

He had two kids, he was married, great family man, and he had diabetes.

And, you know, one day he came to see me and I was like, man, what's going on here?

Because he's, you know, his diabetes, his sugar, just sugars were doing much better.

And we did some tests on him, you know, for maintenance and follow up and his blood sugars had like shot through the roof.

I thought, wow, that's just not like him, you know, and instead of passing judgment and saying, oh, he's just noncompliant and this, that and the other, I sat with him and

You know, it's like, let's just have a conversation.
