who may have to make those difficult decisions, that actually this isn't right for me.
And to some people that can feel like a failure.
Well, I shouldn't be leaving.
It should be my boss who's leaving because they're treating me so badly.
But looking after your mental health and your well-being is never a failure.
It can be the right decision to sometimes do that.
Okay, it's a good question.
A lot of people that I'll meet in my clinic will have both.
So it's not one or the other.
Let's start with what burnout is.
So burnout is simply running our stress system too hot for too long with not enough rest or support.
That's all it is.
If any of us do that,
will become burnt out.
It's just a natural consequence of that.
And what we'll notice when we become burnt out, the things to look out for are those three core symptoms described by Professor Christina Maslach of emotional exhaustion.
So absolutely exhausted at the end of the workday, not able to really do anything other than people sometimes say, open a bottle of wine.
And then the second thing is emotional detachment, which is where we become more cynical, more robotic.
We don't kind of connect with our patients or clients as much.
And then the third thing is a loss of joy in work.
