Right?
So for me, when I was pregnant 27 almost years ago at this point, I was a grad student and I knew I had PTSD.
And I went to those stacks at the library to look for research on like literally what will flashbacks do to my baby?
Meaning like if it's this unpleasant for me to be inside my body, what is this doing to a fetus inside my body?
Like this can't be a good thing.
And then it became, how do you explain a flashback to a toddler?
What do I do about my trauma-coping adaptations that aren't working for parenting?
And there was nothing like crickets.
There was no research.
This was prior to 9-11, if you could believe that.
And the world was not talking about trauma yet.
So
It took time for me to realize this, but I started realizing that everything that I'm specializing in, like I was working in a clinic for kids who were acting out.
I was working in another clinic for kids who were encoped, who would lose control of their bowels.
I was working on a parenting study, like a large scale study of child temperament.
It took me a long time, and my classmates were all working on super specific things, right?
It would be like Piagettian models of language development in four year olds.
I'd be like, why don't I have a single research focus?
And then I realized I'm looking for the impact of trauma on parenting.
Cause you know what happens in clinics with full of kids who act out a lot and in other clinics full of kids with encoprices, what you're really treating is a lot of childhood trauma in the end.
