I sort of see it like a tree.
I love metaphors.
The picture of a tree.
Okay, you might see some fruit on the tree.
You might see the state of the tree.
You might be on top of the soil, all of those things.
But if we are like a tree, we can see the fruit that's showing our lives, for better or for worse.
We can see the kind of environment we're in.
But actually, what's going on at the root level?
What's really happening under the ground?
And I think...
For me, it's that asking questions, creating space, really supportive environment for people to look at, okay, what's really going on and then where's their choice or what can they do?
And rather than perhaps sometimes in medicine, I would find I was just a pill for every ill or a sticking plaster, which is not so satisfying for either doctor or patient, but actually really, yeah, really get into what is that root cause.
No, I don't think I've heard it.
I think that just is a really helpful phrase.
term for the sort of work that I'm doing and one analogy I came up with as well was if you looked out your window and you've got an apple tree in the garden and it's growing and you know it's growing apples as you would expect it to and you decide oh I don't want apples this year I want pears and you went to the market and bought a load of pears and stapled them to your tree you could look out the window and think oh look I've got a pear tree but of course you haven't you know the next year it's going to grow apples again and I think sometimes we can try and fruit staple we can try and change our behaviours
but without actually really drilling down and going, what's really the cause of it?
And so sometimes when we focus too much on just behaviour change and don't go back a few steps, that analogy can be quite powerful to think, yeah, am I just fruit stapling or am I really actually making some deeper change?
Yeah, the kind of approach I think...
I think, I mean, I do tend to go quite deep, as you can imagine, with those kind of questions.
