Because we can't really set a boundary for ourselves unless we know what's important to us and what really matters.
And one of the challenges often is, you know, depends on our upbringing and our experience in life is knowing where we begin and where others kind of finish, if that makes sense.
Yeah, definitely.
yeah it's such a good question because i think that's there's all these sort of steps almost isn't the first step is knowing yourself to know what's important to you to know what you do you and don't like and you do and don't want to then set the boundaries but also around kind of goals and what boundaries are going to help you achieve your goals as well so i think what gets in the way not i mean yes then the next step is setting the boundary but then the third step is when someone pushes back against it or life changes and
I think an important principle is boundaries aren't walls.
They are fences.
If you think of your garden, your plot, it outlines, doesn't it, what's yours and what's your neighbour's, your next door neighbour's, if you think about a physical boundary in that way.
And I think
I think one of the things that gets in the way is actually believing that it's okay to do it.
That can maybe be the first thing.
It's okay to hold your boundary, even if the other person doesn't like it.
I think it's often that test, isn't it?
If you think about young children, you might set a boundary around the way that we want.
I don't know, it could be a boundary around...
healthy eating for example and of course they won't like their job your job is to set the boundaries up and say as a parent their job is to push back against it and your job is to hold to it with empathy and I think I think sometimes we don't hold to it if we're fearful of the response or we don't like not being liked or the fear of not being liked so I think that can get in the way firstly it's like oh it's a fear of rejection really when we think about the root cause isn't it
Yeah.
and it's also self-love too isn't it it's actually I'm going to set a boundary perhaps around finishing at a reasonable time because I want to look after myself to be able to then relax and unwind so that's showing yourself that you're of value and I think another thing that stops us from holding to boundaries is about not valuing ourselves in a
and valuing other people.
I know there's a time and a place in this we're putting other people's needs above our own.
I get that completely.
