But why are they so popular?
Why do they persist?
Why do we believe them?
Because we love simple solutions to things.
So, like, we just crave certainty.
And for a long time, science has been able to offer
this certainty.
So if you're in an argument with somebody or in a debate and somebody pulls out statistics, as I hear people do on your show all the time, or they might cite a study, right?
It sort of is your trump card as if to say, well, that's the end of it, right?
Science knows full stop.
That's not how science works at all.
Science is an evolving thing.
I think what we need to do is to be critical without being conspiratorial.
And that's the fine line that we try to
kind of inculcate in our students in university.
So it's not just teaching them more stuff.
It's not more rote learning.
It's really helping people to develop the skill of being able to kind of sniff out when something is rubbish and also kind of figure out, well, maybe there isn't a huge amount of truth to that.
How would I investigate it?
So the best way to do it is just to roll up your sleeves, give things a go.
