which may not necessarily be a bad thing.

But I think if you're a country that wants to boost productivity, wants to see more innovation, then that could be problematic because it means more money available for old blue chip stocks, less money available for startups and stocks still dependent on capital growth for their returns.

I think that is a bit of a problem.

here that Treasury, the Treasurer, never properly allowed for.

But it's likely impacting our market.

It's hard to know precisely by how much, but I think it will be having some impact as it biases investors towards dividend payers away from more growthy stocks.

No, and it probably didn't, or not to the same extent where you've got those extreme moves.

I suspect it partly reflects the somewhat rich valuations on the market.

It's not cheap anymore.

So therefore, if stocks disappoint, then they get sold off quite a lot.

And then if other stocks are disappointing at the same time but you actually outperform, then you can go up a lot at the same time.

So there's that factor in there.

I think it may also reflect a changed nature in the market, more institutional investors in index funds, more retail investors perhaps not, and there's maybe less institutional buying acting on a day-to-day basis to smooth things out because a lot of it has gone down an index path.

So therefore, you get these outsized reactions by retail investors responding to surprises one way or the other, but there's not the smoothing ability that may have been there in the past.

So that could be a factor.

I mean, some ways, if you just look at the overall market, it doesn't look so bad.

It's a bit like I live on Sydney's northern beaches, Pittwater.

Sometimes you can look at it from above and it looks perfectly calm, but beneath the surface, there's a huge turbulence going on and that shows up on the edges of the

edges of pit water, so to speak.

And then of course you go outside and you notice all the swell coming in, causing that turbulence.
