I think he was a superb GP and he both gave me an understanding of my pain.
He gave me something to do with it that made me feel in charge.
He didn't...
It wasn't like he was going to fix it.
It made me feel I could fix it and showed me how to do it and didn't ask more of me than I was capable of.
He didn't ask for any heroics.
He just said, look, just do this for as long as you can, a couple of times a day.
So, yeah, I suppose my journey was that I was telling that story to a postgraduate class of GP trainees.
And I said, now, what do you think of that intervention?
And they said, oh, I love that.
It's really good.
He did all the right things.
So what would you say if I came in and said, I'm in pain emotionally, I'm feeling deep sadness?
And in that instant, one of them said, the moment you asked that question, my eyes in my imagination diverted to the prescription pad, that I wanted to give you something to take it away.
And he said it very honestly.
And that's, of course, how they're what's what we're expecting of them.
But my GP could say be with the physical pain in your elbow.
But what if a GP was to say to me, how about you begin to trust and take find a way, a safe way to be with maybe the support you need to be with this particular discomfort you're feeling?
You know, I mean, that it just almost sounds counterintuitive, doesn't it?
It sounds like, well, that's not what doctors are meant to be doing.
