They energize us to deal with things that are difficult in our lives.

Fear, we get out of the way.

Anger...

It can be misused terribly in control and bullying, but it can also be that moment when we finally say, enough, I'm not taking anymore, and we address some injustice and we get energised to deal with it.

And sadness is the same.

It moves us out of being stuck into some kind of emotional dynamic where we can begin to grieve and let go and move on with our lives.

It's a very deeply inherent response to what's overwhelming, to what's frightening, to what's a lot for us to deal with.

That we're either frightened or it's too familiar.

I think that's the other thing, that it touches something in us that we recognise a fear that we have about losing someone or something.

Oh, I think our whole society would prefer that none of us cried, really, and we all just coped and were super cool and got by.

But here's the thing, that those kind of people who are super cool and get by are also people who have no spark in them, that they're kind of dull, you know, they're flat because they're not emotional, you know, and we know this.

We meet people like that at parties and we kind of want to get away from them as quickly as possible.

I think people who have spark, who have vitality, are people who are able to appropriately feel what they feel and express emotions.

I think there's a huge release.

I think that all the tension, all the energy we've used to maintain some kind of stability, some kind of coherence in ourselves to keep...
