So our occupational therapist plays a really important role within our prehab service, supporting our patients with their mental wellbeing.
Yeah.
Yeah.
I mean, I, I, I find that my first interaction with all the patients, I, I kind of feel like a little bit of a salesman at times because I'm trying to sell a lot of, um, you know, what we're trying to do with the patients, you know, when you, when you've just had a diagnosis, you know, all of a sudden you're, you're, you know, it's not uncommon for a patient to be asking, why am I coming in for exercise now?
Was that relevant?
So there is a lot of education that comes in from not only like the patient, but sometimes like other colleagues that, you know, it might not be front and center for them, you know, prehab.
So there's absolutely a selling component, but I do find, you know, it's probably an element of the cohort of people that we're working with, but
When you've had a cancer diagnosis and you do have a big surgery coming up, there is almost like an element of fear which can help with motivation and seeking support.
I would say with educating our colleagues on what we do that I would say it's generally well received and all the clinicians that we work alongside with are quite
on board with what we're trying to achieve with their patients.
I think as clinicians, we've got our own specific roles and things that we're trying to do with the patients.
And I guess with prehab coming in as a new part of the treatment pathway, it might not be front and centre in their mind.
generally you know when we're educating our colleagues it's you know just letting them know them know that we're here we can support their patients rather than being like oh no we don't want to send our patients to you guys they just need that jogging memory all the time yeah so we've come an awful long way in in five or ten years with this where does it go next like in another five or ten years what
I mean, there's often new treatments that come out that often can massively decondition patients as well.
So as cancer treatment evolves, I'd imagine there would be more scope for prehabilitation in different sort of tumour groups and treatments.
So I can see it expanding in that way and then possibly outside of oncology as well.
know there's lots of other major surgeries um and they're also equally quite stressful on the body so yeah i can see prehab saving the nhs quite a bit of money if it was more widely established across lots of different areas and and hopefully i think what we're probably
Yeah, I mean, it's got to be walking for like exercise.
I mean, it's the most successful thing that most people can do.
I mean, even better if you can walk at like a pace where you're getting a little bit out of breath.
