Officer Ralph Hill must have had his personal gun with him every day he went to work because the FBI specifically kept this arrest a secret because they were trying to avoid this exact disaster.
From what I can tell, the actual gunfight was quick, maybe even less than a minute.
Sometimes that's all it takes.

So as Hill was exiting the building, he saw the federal agents gathering outside to arrest him and his cohorts.
And without thinking too much about it, he opened the lobby door and opened fire.
He shot two Bureau of Prison employees in his suicide by better cop scenario.
He shot an unnamed BOP lieutenant and Special Agent William Centner.
Centner was able to return fire, killing Hill in the prison courtyard.
Special Agent William Centner later died of his wounds at the hospital.
He was posthumously given the Medal of Valor by former President and war criminal George W. Bush.
The other five correction officers gave up without a fight.
