I've looked at Quebec prisoners of war from the 1800s.

And one of the last studies I did was on Carthage.

And so Carthage is the name for modern-day Tunisia, right?

And the sample I looked at was a fascinating sample at time period between their, their war period.

So it was like this very peaceful time at, um, in Carthage before, before the vandals got there, um, uh, before the, um, Arabic's took over.

So it was kind of a peaceful time.

And, um,

What we find there is that the infection rates were fairly high.

There's fairly likely to be syphilis in that area and other infectious diseases.

And that's partly because there was so much traffic, international traffic going through Carthage at the time.

But talking about interesting individuals, one individual actually had her sinuses cut and

then cleared an infectious bone activity on her face.

So she had surgery.

And it's unclear whether she survived that because it's hard to tell.

If she did, she didn't survive it long because there's not a lot of bone reaction.

There's not a lot of healing going on.

There's also...

Two individuals who had what we call trepanation, which is surgery that you find all over the world in prehistory where they cut out part of the skull to release pressure.

And you can find cases like this in Peru, for example, quite often where you also have the elongated skulls.
