Elon Musk of Tesla and SpaceX fame says OpenAI lost its way.

It was founded as a non-profit to create AI for the benefit of humanity, but he argues that a for-profit arm designed to help raise money and attract talent has taken over.

On the stand during week one, Musk's testimony got heated at times.

He said Sam Altman and fellow founder Greg Brockman, quote, stole a charity and have enriched themselves.

OpenAI argues that Musk left after a power struggle and launched this case out of sour grapes.

He's since gone on to start his own for-profit AI company, which competes against OpenAI.

And OpenAI lawyers say he even tried to poach its employees for Tesla while he was on the board.

Altman is expected to testify in the coming days.

During a second day on the stand, Musk cast himself as indispensable to the launch of OpenAI, but called himself a fool for contributing so much to the company, which was founded as a charity, but later added a for-profit arm.

Musk contends that the for-profit entity has, quote, become the main thing, and the nonprofit's mission of creating AI for the benefit of humanity has been cast aside by OpenAI's CEO, Sam Altman, and its president, Greg Brockman.

Musk helped found the company and put in $38 million to

but he left in 2018 after a dispute over who would run the for-profit.

He's seeking a rollback of the for-profit entity and the ouster of Altman and Brockman, changes that could reshape one of the most important AI companies in the world.
