So key rule is to not spring this on your employer.
You first want to understand, is there actually some sort of pay review system in place?
It's not unusual for businesses to have, for example, like an annual pay review cycle.
And so maybe that you wait for that if it's just around the corner or if it's not, and this is more pressing.
then you want to make sure that you're acknowledging, hey, I know we normally do pay reviews in April each year.
It's August.
I'd like to have a conversation with you.
So going to your employer, going to your manager and giving them a heads up on what you're finding and that you'd love to sit down and talk with them about it is the first step.
Such a good point.
So
I'm going to assume, I think pretty safely, that the majority of listeners to this show are pretty ambitious.
And so it's not simply about a paycheck.
It's also about career growth.
And yeah, if we can frame it up that we're saying, hey, manager, I'd really like the opportunity to sit down with you and discuss the evolution of my role here.
my career growth, my development, whatever language feels most comfortable to you.
I think that's a really nice umbrella context for the conversation.
And then out of that, you can then say, you know, in particular, I'm interested to discuss how my role has evolved and the impact that that might have on my pay or my potential earnings.
So I think another gentler way
to enter a conversation like this is not simply about saying, I'm looking for a pay increase right now.
That might be what we're working towards, but maybe we go in a little bit softer.
