And having that structure as I was starting something so new and different.
And as I was coming back to clinical work.
For the first time in eight years was a really great thing.
More of the caregivers, but there is this way that if I'm working directly with the person with dementia.
At least to the extent of doing a thorough O T evaluation.
Doing
repeated cognitive testing so that I can establish a pattern of performance.
And I'm not just looking at one little snapshot of a point in time, but I'm actually able to get to know them a little bit.
And I'm using the Allen disabilities model.
The assessments that go with that are very activity-based and very functional.
It's not like
doing the mocha to get somebody's cognitive level where bringing it down to pencil and paper, which can be useful, but
understanding them in the whole context of how different cognitive levels are able to function.
is tremendously useful in figuring out how to coach caregivers on how to communicate, how to simplify tasks, how to support the care recipient in functioning to their best ability.
So
Understanding when you don't have the just right challenge, when you don't have a match between ability and task.
And so you need to adjust one by giving a little help or the other by bringing down the complexity of the task.
And so helping to match all that up is really key to what I'm doing.
And the caregiver is really the focus of change.
in that therapeutic relationship.
