I mean, one most dispiriting thing about domestic abuse and Vogue at large is the numbers remain unyielding.
They don't change.
They haven't changed.
And the clearest indicator of that and the most unyielding stat is that a woman is murdered every week by a former or current partner.
And that is the most, if you like, that is the biggest indicator of whether or not we as a society are succeeding in tackling the worst of this crime.
And we know that still one in three women over the age of 16 will experience domestic abuse.
We also know that only one in five women will ever report to the police.
The stats are skewed.
So what you have is a picture of a crime that is almost unparalleled in its magnitude against women and children.
and simply not resourced enough for society to respond to it.
So at Women's Aid, we oversee the vast majority of domestic abuse services in the country.
We have over, we have almost 200 members providing hundreds of services.
And across that cohort, we are having to refuse three quarters of women and children wanting to use our services.
Now, as much as we talk about reform, they are not yet able to yield resources in the way that the current government and subsequent governments have been able to do.
So my sort of challenge, as well as the reform challenge,
is to really say to current government, when you're holding a refusal rate into services of three quarters, a first refusal rate, what do you do with that?
You can't turn a blind eye.
You have to invest.
And the amounts to invest are peanuts when it comes to the wealth of public spending.
So why are we not making the choice to do that?
