Well, you know, I think part of the problem is, you know, for 42 years, I've walked with gang members.
And I can say definitively, I've never met an evil person, and I've never even met a bad person.
I've met wounded people, broken people, despondent people, traumatized people, mentally ill people, and addicted people, but I've never met anybody evil or bad.
And I think that's, gang members have taught me that.
If there's one lesson I've learned, it's that.
But we've gotten stuck in kind of this moral quest.
And I think the moral quest has never kept us moral.
It's just kept us from each other.
It's a way of drawing lines that Jesus wants to erase.
You know, us and them, the good people and the bad people.
And it's difficult because you get into the sheep and the goats and you kind of go, I'm not so sure the God of love sees things that way.
I think if I can understand what a broken, wounded person is, how much more so the God of love.
And so that's difficult.
It's a hard one to kind of understand.
to return to some other way that divides us one from the other.
And we are the people who follow the gospel and you are the people who don't.
And so it's more nuanced.
It invites us to something that's really quite a mystical view, I think, frankly, where we hope to see people as God does.
And once they see you, seeing them with those eyes, then they become that truth.
They inhabit that truth.
