Can you imagine what this country would look like when the two people working in 20 years' time, they're supporting a retiree, so you and I, all of us, plus at the same time they will be predominantly Māori Pacific or migrant.

So that's in a very, very short time.

So while we're still all alive, we are going to see this country through a very different lens.

We'll be a lot less European.

We'll be European for those who are in retirement.

The workforce will be very diverse.

And actually, we're going to have a lot less people.

So the people who are working, we want to make sure that they are in the best possible position to be highly productive and thriving in whatever they choose to be.

So we want to make sure that all of those groups, particularly our migrant Māori and Pacific groups, are in the industries of the future so that they're not going to end up serving hospitality or tourism or caring for a retired population, which is going to be enormous.

So I think we've got to understand, and it's only this week I saw the first paper come out, which was presented to government this week, which is New Zealand Needs a Population Strategy.

And up until now, we haven't had one.

So we still don't have one.

At least now there is talk about the need to have a strategy so that when each political party has a view about what is the reality, because the wonderful thing about demography is we can see it because these people are born already.

They're already in our school system.

We know that our population in our schools is declining.

So high schools and primary schools will shrink.

So while at the same time we're needing larger schools right now, that will be in a few years' time starting to decline the other way.

We'll need more retirement villages, bigger hospitals, and we'll have a concentration of people living in certain areas of the country who are retired because they'll gravitate to where housing is cheaper, where hospitals are cheaper.

you know, a significant and accessible where public transport is stronger, which means a city pool.

So people are going to move out of the regions towards cities.
