I think one of the best things that that education gave me in terms of the job that I do now is I learned the language.

I understood it.

And by understanding something, it then makes it easier to explain it to others.

In a way that doesn't come across as patronizing.

I like to describe my reportage as conversational, as user friendly.

And it doesn't, I hope, step into the realm of being patronizing.

Yes.

This is something really important that I know, and you don't, and I'm going to tell you about it, and I'm going to make you feel stupid for not knowing.

Yeah, you have to be there and you have to sit through the legal argument.

And it's important to do so not in the moment because in the moment you can't actually report on what's being debated in the absence of the jury because clearly they're not privy to it.

So in the past when I started out in this job, and it's foolish now looking back, but when the jury left the room, I used to close my laptop.

or I put down my pen.

So then there wasn't a fear that anything that I heard in their absence would lead into my reportage.

But now I take a very detailed note of that legal argument because while the jury, you know, won't hear it in the moment, it can often be very interesting after the fact.

Afterwards.

So when there's an outcome, a verdict, for example, it's interesting then to go, this was something that the jury didn't hear.

You know, a piece of evidence that didn't go to the jurors or, you know, the legal teams trashed out for days.

They really didn't want this piece.
