You've also got your politicians, the ones who make our laws, the judges who are then responsible for enforcing them and whatnot and making sure that people get a fair trial.
And I think what causes the most controversy are sentences, when sentences are handed down.
And you mentioned you might have two cases which on the face of it look identical, but no two cases are the same in my experience.
Which stands to reason then that no two sentences are the same unless you're talking about a mandatory sentence in the case of murder.
And I have very strong views in relation to sentencing and murder trials in Ireland where I think we need to change.
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
I think it's about 20, 20 plus now.
And there is somewhat of a mystery then around, like we'll cover a case endlessly, particularly the more high profile ones that will resonate with people and we get to talk about them.
And then when a person goes off to begin a sentence, for the most part, they're forgotten about.
Yeah.
You don't see reportage.
Very rarely you see reportage of them leaving prison, getting released from prison.
But that throws back to, as I mentioned a while ago, the first season of Inside the Crime where you have a family grieving for a daughter and two granddaughters who were killed in brutal circumstances.
And even they don't really have any insight as to when the man responsible for all of their hurt and pain and grief is going to walk free.
It's so rare in this country that somebody will spend the rest of their life behind bars.
Most people, I mean, the way the sentencing regime is set up, I suppose the cornerstone of the sentencing regime in Ireland is...
Yes, punishment, deterrence and all of that stuff, but rehabilitation, you know, that it's in the best interests of everybody, including the accused person and society as a whole, for that person to come out of their sentence a changed person.
But sometimes, do you know what, that doesn't meet the case.
And certainly going back to the wheelings.
they would feel that for that man to walk amongst them again in their community after doing what he did, no sentence would be long enough.
