So it's hard to get your head around it.

And just in terms of sentencing and all the controversies that seemingly low sentences get when they're handed out is that there is a process and judges have to look at two things in a broad way.

The offence and also the offender, because in the same way that no two offences are the same, no two criminals are the same.

So you have to look at their background and take all of that into account.

And sometimes, and maybe we are part of the reason to blame for that kind of situation.

public outrage that you just couldn't go into the level of detail that a judge does when it comes to explaining a sentence.

And people just hear what they got, the end result, and can be outraged without really knowing why that sentence was handed down and why it was seemingly low.

Yeah, and there is that safeguard as well, I suppose, where you have a very efficient court of appeal, a very busy court of appeal, I must say.

Yeah.

So, you know, if somebody is unhappy and that works for both sides, if the DPP feels that a sentence is too low, is unduly lenient, they can appeal it.

And equally, if a convicted person believes that their sentence is too high, they can appeal that too.

And then it's left to three judges of the Court of Appeal to listen to submissions and see if mistakes have been made.

And they do overturn sentences.

They do overturn.

Only recently...

a fairly high profile case where a murder conviction was overturned on the back of comments that the judge made to the jury that it was argued that may have influenced their decision when it came to deciding guilt and that was overturned.

And while that is really difficult for the victim's family and

You know, all of the time and the resources that went into bringing that prosecution and it's overturned and not on the evidence, but on the back of judges' comments.

I mean, it was the right decision for the court of appeal to make.

And if those feel, if those kind of affected by it feel aggrieved, they have other avenues that they can...
