It's meant to be practical.
It's not an academic exercise or even a scholarly work.
It's simple things that people can do.
And to give away the kind of the storyline, it is that, yes, we're going to disagree.
And some of our greatest leaders have had strong views and they've been firm in their views, but they've been able to disagree respectfully.
And they've also been able to disagree in a way that they can come back and get something done in the areas where they do agree.
and that's one of the problems we have right now and i think that's one of the reasons americans are frustrated was it is because we disagree on a certain subject and we immediately conclude that that person has a bad idea and they're a bad person conversations over and our elected officials are doing the same thing but people want to get things done so they want us to disagree but they also want us to do it in a way where we can get something done in the areas where we do agree
As you know, years ago, I worked for President Reagan, and he had a saying that kind of stuck with me.
He would say, if you can get 80% of what you want in a deal, take it, and come back next deal and try to get the rest.
But we're in an environment right now where it's not enough for you to win.
Sometimes it seems it's even more important for your opponent to have a humiliating loss.
And when you get in that mode, it doesn't really advance the interests of our democracy.
Well, there are several.
One is to tolerate disagreement.
And the book has quotes from a number of different people, from Sandra Day O'Connor to Snoop Dogg.
But one is Steve Jobs at Apple.
And he said, we like disagreement.
