But I also, when I had the chance to work for President Reagan in the White House, I saw how he could reach across the aisle with people of the opposite political party who were also like-minded and trying to find common ground, like Tip O'Neill, that famous Tip O'Neill, Ronald Reagan relationship.

And they disagreed on a lot of things, probably more than they agreed on by far.

But they were able to find the areas where they could agree and get things done.

And that was because neither, though, just using that Tip O'Neill, Ronald Reagan example, they disagreed about as far as you could.

You had a conservative Republican governor from the West and a liberal Democratic speaker from the East.

And they would still get together at night and have a drink and tell Irish stories.

Well, as you point out, with President Reagan back when he was running and since then, this is a problem that is not new.

It's been evolving.

In fact, some of the research we've done, some people feel it goes all the way back to the Vietnam era where there was a distrust in institutions and Americans were deeply divided.

Others point to the Supreme Court confirmation cases.

You know, Senator O'Connor,

was confirmed 99 to zero.

Anthony Kennedy, who turns 90 today, by the way, he was confirmed 97 to zero.

Ruth Bader Ginsburg, 96 to three.

That was a time, but things started to turn.

Supreme Court confirmations evolved to what they are now, where they're strictly party line votes.

So that contributed to it.

I also, and then most recently, the kind of the era of wokeness,

versus the error of MAGA.

So I think it's important to not say this is just a problem that popped up now, but something that's been growing.
