And I finally found a lawyer in Spain who specializes in tourist visas for Spaniards.
And she said, the US government is very forgiving.
If you're European and white, of course.
She said, as long as you admit your crime, do your time, you're fine.
So she got him an interview at the US embassy in Madrid.
My dad goes there with all of his documents, including my wedding invitation, and they got back to him with a 10 year visa.
The week before my wedding, mom took some time off of work to help me with the last details.
And the day that I was going to the airport to pick up dad, she said, I'm coming with you.
Remember, they haven't spoken for 17 years and they went through a tremendously long distance divorce.
I was not expecting that.
We're at the airport and his flight comes in and we start to wait.
An hour goes by, two, three, four.
He had been detained at immigration again.
But this time around, he was bold.
He was empowered.
He had a piece of paper in his hand from the U.S.
Embassy saying he was allowed to be a tourist in this country for 10 years.
So they had no choice but to say, welcome to America, sir.
Enjoy your stay.
