The problem is that for us, those feelings often were dismissed or punished in our childhood.
So when our kids show those emotions that we might have been told, turn that front upside down or the wind might change or go to your room and come back when you can behave or I'm going to give you a smack.
When our kids behave that way, even though we're not really as a generation doing the smacking, we find it uncomfortable because it was taught to us that that was uncomfortable.
So as a result, inadvertently and not from a place of meanness or harshness or because we don't care, we dismiss emotions.
So when our child whinges, we say, you're okay.
When our child falls over, we say, up you get.
You're fine.
You're a brave kid.
You know, when our kid picks on their sister, we say, just stop it.
You know, we're just trying to shut it down.
If our kid says, you love my brother more than me, you say, don't be ridiculous.
We love you all the same.
If my child comes home and says no one would play with me at school, we say, you're amazing.
Don't you worry about those kids.
Go play with someone else.
You're an amazing kid.
You kind of... We will desperately feel awful when our kids feel awful.
And yet, ironically, the thing that our kids really need in their feelings is for someone to say, hey, that sounds really tricky.
I hear you.
Tell me more.
