It confuses parents.

They get caught up in, well, I'm a gentle parent and therefore that means I can't ever just tell my kid what's happening and what's not.

And it can get really confusing and competitive.

So I want all parents to know that, you know, there is no parent-child relationship on the planet like yours.

And every day, you know, I work in a maternity unit and I work with brand new parents.

And one of the things I say to them right at the start, I say, you know, you're not meant to know what you're doing.

And I talk a lot about that.

you know, if you're going to have a moment over the next two days and you're going to think, why don't I know what I'm doing and why can't I be a better mum for this baby or why isn't feeding going better than I thought or something?

And I said, when you have that moment, I really want you to put your hand on your heart and say,

because I'm just two days into this.

I've literally just started.

But I tell them how actually that compassion, we might continue to apply that to every situation that we come along.

Every time our child hits a new stage, we're still that first-time parent.

We're still doing that thing for the first time.

And actually, even with subsequent children, we're learning that human.

So there's kind of no one style or one approach that is ever going to work.

for all humans because every single time you have another baby, you're learning the relationship with that child and with you.

It's the we that you're working on and it's a dance.

And it's about kind of being responsive and good enough in the way we approach that.

when our kids show big feelings and big emotions and even small feelings like just whinging or whining is kind of the display of a smaller feeling than a child that's fully melting down and hitting and throwing their toys around.
