This is so bloody hard some days.
That is the fastest way through to being the parent you want to be.
And the incredible thing is...
is that the compassion we want to hold for our child in the moment that we lose, that kind of ability to sit with our kids, we're going to get that a lot faster by starting with ourselves.
If I acknowledge I am doing the best that I can, that flows onto my kid, that kid in front of me is also doing the best that they can.
And now I can react from the place of what I want to be doing, not from a place of fear or panic or fight, flight or freeze.
It would make our job so much easier.
You know, I think it's twofold.
One, there is a strong history in our world of sort of what good kids look like.
You know, from the minute we have a baby, is it a good baby?
I mean, what's a bad baby?
A good toddler is a really calm person.
placid, compliant toddler.
And, you know, it's funny because my experience is that those kids that are big hearted and big feelings and big behavior in the early years, they're often actually easier tweens and teens, you know, in, in the sense of what's easy.
I think all of our kids show up to bring something.
And I think even our calm, quite good kids show
often we're really working around anxiety or the struggles that they have in the later years as well.
So yeah, I would love if we just had a societal view that all kids are good and all parents are doing their best.
I think it would make such a difference.
I think that the current conversation in the media right now about helicopter parents or dolphin parents or gentle parents or, you know, kids need old school discipline parents, I just think all of that is so unhelpful because it pits parents against each other.
