Totally.
And what I think modern parents don't need is more advice on what to do or...
more rules about what kids need.
I think we know the parent we wanna be.
Most of us have a pretty good idea of what we don't wanna be and what we wanna be.
What is so much harder is actually being that in the moment.
And so what I'm trying to do is kind of actually hold the parent and acknowledge within the delivering of, well, what do you do?
Here's the script.
If we don't do that with a sense of compassion, that it is really hard to be the parent you wanna be in the moment.
that there are actually covert forces working against you in that your feelings about feelings, the way you feel about anger, sadness, jealousy, those emotions our kids show on the daily, that's sort of set into you in the first five years of life through your early relationships.
And if we don't hold the parent and acknowledge that overriding that, pausing long enough to be what your child needs in the moment is like not for the faint hearted.
It is such a hard thing to actually do.
And actually the only way parents can do it different is through compassion.
Like I think compassion for ourselves is the single biggest thing we can do to change our reactivity in the moment.
It's not sitting on the couch saying,
I need to go better.
You know, why did I yell?
Why am I a shouty parent?
Whatever.
It is 100%.
