They don't call it that, but I call it that.

They took four experts that can echolocate, visually impaired people that can echolocate, and 12 sighted non-echolocators.

Oh, the other thing is my best friend is visually impaired, and I used to talk to him about this.

Like, is this a thing?

And he was like, yeah, I don't think so.

So I thought, all right, if he's saying it's not a thing, then it's not a thing.

But this study took four visually impaired people that could do this, 12 non-impaired that echoed, and they put them with EEG caps into like a dark room, and they would simulate environments that had items in this environment using clicks and echoes.

So it was all simulated, but they would like put basically a big box, like a virtual box into this space, and they would listen to the clicks.

and they had to determine where the box was within this space.

Well, the 12 people that were cited were no better than chance.

They're basically 50%.

Whereas the four experts got way better than chance and three out of the four

who were blindest earlier in their lives were 70% right in terms of locating the items.

And there was a neat thing that happened that the farther left or right the target was from center, the more accurate they would get, which kind of makes sense.

Sort of like if you imagine that it gets more difficult if it's in the center.

But then also their accuracy was exponential in terms of how many numbers of clicks so that you would get each click.

They would get sort of more, more precise at an exponential rate until they got to about seven or eight clicks from seven to eight was a big leap.

And then after eight, it didn't get any better, which I thought was really interesting.

So these clicks stimulated the brain spatial networks faster than each subsequent click.

So they're tapping into the central nervous system and the visual and auditory pathways.
