And that's why it became the no-wash, that ended up being called the no-wash protest.

And that went on for about five years.

And the buildings, they were systemic.

And you would get, if you got food, you would get half rations.

So it would be very little food.

So you might have seen photographs of some of the men.

They were very gaunt men.

You know, they couldn't shave, so the long hair and all of that.

So it was horrendous.

And you didn't get any mail.

You weren't allowed mail.

You weren't allowed anything to write on.

You weren't allowed anything to read.

The system was trying to break everything.

you're well.

And therefore the biddings became part of that.

Well, I mean, I joined the IRA.

I didn't wake up when I was 16 or 17 and think I want to go out and fight Brits, you know.

But yes, there was a righteousness and we were fighting for the freedom of our country.

It had been partitioned.
